estate and Virgin Island real estate!
Coral Bay is a unique and entertaining settlement
on the lovely island of St John. It is an eclectic mixture of beautiful
and not so beautiful, of tropical and “stateside,” of
new and old. Donkeys and goats and chickens and sheep share roads
and fields with locals and tourists. These days there is bus service
to the “other” side of the island. There is a gas station
which actually is open, as well as 2 small grocery stores.

The harbor is the center of the area.
Ringed by beautiful green hills, now dotted with homes, many
sailboats are moored here. An old, historic concrete dock,
is the traditional entryway for sailors arriving on these
shores. This dock has been in use since the 20’s when
Coral Harbor was the primary entry point into St. John and
travel was busy between this island and Tortola. Just around
the corner is the larger harbor, in fact the largest natural
harbor in the Caribbean. “Hurricane Hole”, now
protected by the Virgin Islands National Park, has historically
been a safe harbor for ships in the Caribbean during Hurricane
Season. Geographically this area is spectacular. |
Now when one arrives ashore in this Caribbean
homestyle harbor, one is greeted by an array of dinghies,
boats and cars. Coral Bay Marine stands guard at head of the
dock, look here for Alan and Sandy Mohler, and their dog Dipstick,
the proprietors, who have an incredible wealth of knowledge
of all things marine. If you need engine work, marine or automotive
this is the place. Alan Mohler was the proud recipient of
the ”Golden Anchor” award for his invaluable help
to all islanders and boaters after Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. |

A short distance away, is Skinny Legs,
or Skinny’s, a famous island hangout for locals and
tourists alike. Everyone has had a Skinny’s burger or
mahi sandwich at some time! The complex also houses various
retail stores. Many events are held here annually and all
of them are fun!
This is the social center of the area, the Coral Bay Yacht
Club meets here and every Saturday morning the popular KATS
(Kids and the Sea) program kicks off its weekly sessions here.
Look for Doug and Mo, long time residents and owners, they
have the “skinny” on everything! |
Just down the “main street”
brightly painted and well maintained fire trucks are parked
in front of the Coral Bay Fire Station. If you need assistance,
you can always stop here.
And adjacent to the Fire Station is the Elementary School,
to be precise, the Guy Benjamin Elementary School, named after
St John’s and Coral Bay’s most famous resident,
Guy Benjamin. Guy Benjamin has been wonderfully documenting
life in these islands his entire life. He is usually at home
in Coral Bay surrounded by his beloved animals and plants.
Sputnik’s, a local bar named for the satellite, and
the P&B Café an excellent breakfast and pizza parlor
are located just across the street. |
